About Neil Daykin

Neil Daykin

Outdoor Lighting Design

Having started his career with a lighting rental supplier, Neil was able to learn his trade by preparing equipment in the warehouse and liaising with clients, through to delivering the end product on site. Over the 6 years in post this led to work in a range of market sectors, and first introduced Neil to outdoor lighting. Neil soon developed a reputation in the local area for his outdoor lighting design skills, and spent many hours throughout the summer providing temporary lighting installations for weddings and parties throughout the south of England.

Neil Daykin is an established lighting designer with experience of a wealth of genres including intimate domestic gardens, large scale outdoor events, conferences, concerts, theatre productions and fashion shows to name but a few. In 2014 Neil was invited to provide lighting design and installation to an artisan garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The ‘Topiarists Garden’ went on to win Silver Gilt.

Neil’s professional theatre background at a number of leading venues in the South has allowed him to hone a keen understanding of clients’ creative requirements and deliver stunning lighting packages to a range of budgets.

This hybrid of theatrical, pop concert, and conference design experience allows Neil to add a unique creative flair to your garden or event lighting project.

Having been appointed to Salisbury Playhouse, Neil worked throughout the Electrics Department, being promoted to Acting Chief Electrician. Here he was privileged to work with a number of hugely experienced West End and Broadway lighting designers and to spend time further developing his own design skills. This deep understanding of the theatrical design process offers a rare additional aspect to your outdoor lighting project.

In addition to Outdoor Lighting projects, Neil also worked as Technical Supervisor at the Bournemouth International Centre to provide and manage technical support for conferences, exhibitions and large scale ‘pop’ concerts. Since 2012 Neil has been responsible for the Mayflower Theatre, Southampton. The Mayflower is one of the largest theatres in the country; hosting the best in UK touring theatre, opera and ballet.

Neil has a keen interest in supporting theatre in education. He devotes much of his spare time to assisting a number of schools with their annual productions. By working with the pupils, Neil guides them through the design process, rigging and programming, enabling the school to produce a show with impressive professional grade lighting. The students have full ownership of the the end result, having learnt about professional lighting fixtures, the technical process of theatre, how to work in the professional environment, and gained an insight into the practical application of Health & Safety at Work.

Please feel free to get in touch with Neil to discuss your next event using the numbers or email address below.

Neil’s creativity is outstanding as well as his technical competence. He is reliable, works within the budget provided and is supportive and co-operative with us and all the workers on site during these days of intense preparations.
